  1540Alta California was explored and claimed for Spain in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo  
     
  1568Bernal Diaz del Castillo, also known as Bernal Diaz, (1492-1584) published the 'True History of the Conquest of New Spain' 
     
  1609Town of Santa Fe established as Spanish-Indian trade centre  
     
  17561756 - 1763: The Seven Years War (French and Indian War) due to disputes over land is won by Great Britain. France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for Cuba. 
     
  17751775 - 1783 - The American Revolution creates the United States of America. The Revolution was due to the British burden of taxes and total power to legislate any laws governing the American colonies. George Washington led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War (American War of Independence) 
     
  1776July 4, 1776 - United States Declaration of Independence 
     
  1778July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain and makes an alliance with the American revolutionary forces 
     
  1783September 3, 1783 - The Treaty of Paris is signed by the victorious United States and the defeated Great Britain 
     
  1826Jedediah Smith (1799-1831) leads expedition to Meadow Valley Wash, Nevada 
     
  1828Peter Skene Ogden (1794-1854) working for the Hudson's Bay Company led five trapping expeditions to the "Snake Country" between 1828-1829. He discovered Humboldt River 
     
  18331833 - 44: Various explorers explore Nevada including Joseph Walker, Captain John C. Frémont and Stevens and Townsend 
     
  1843The First wagon trains led by Joseph Walker cross the Sierra  
     
  1847Mormons move to Salt Lake Valley 
     
  1848United States acquired Nevada in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 
     
  1849Captain Hunt leads the first wagon train, The Jayhawkers, to California via the Mormon Trail. The high death tole lead to the name of "Death Valley" 
     
  1851July: gold was discovered in Gold Canyon, near Dalton 
     
  1855The Mormon leader Brigham Young sends a group to establish a mission for the Latter-day Saints Church 
     
  1855Battle with the Native Indians lead by Major William M. Ormsby 
     
  18611861 - 1865: The American Civil War. In 1859 John Brown raided Harpers Ferry and set in motion events that led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War. outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president and in 1861 the South Secedes. The initial Secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. 
     
  1861The region achieves territorial status, separating from Utah  
     
  1863Western Shoshone Indians sign treaty of Ruby Valley, signed by Te-Moak 
     
  1864Statehood - The Date that Nevada was admitted to the Union - October 31, 1864 . Constitution - Nevada was the 36th State to be admitted to the Union. State Motto - " All for our Country " 
     
  18651865 December 6 - The Abolishment of Slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S Constitution is ratified, thus officially abolishing slavery 
     
  1880Chief Winnemucca died. In 1883 Sarah Winnemucca writes the book "Life among the Piutes" and establish Nevada's first school for Native Americans 
     
  18981898-1901 The Spanish American War. On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris the US annexes Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines.
