Utah Timeline

  1776Two Spanish priests, Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante and his superior Francisco Atanasio Dom√≠nguez start from Santa Fe to explore Utah 
     
  17561756 - 1763: The Seven Years War (French and Indian War) due to disputes over land is won by Great Britain. France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for Cuba. 
     
  17751775 - 1783 - The American Revolution creates the United States of America. The Revolution was due to the British burden of taxes and total power to legislate any laws governing the American colonies. George Washington led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War (American War of Independence) 
     
  1776July 4, 1776 - United States Declaration of Independence  
     
  1778July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain and makes an alliance with the American revolutionary forces 
     
  1783September 3, 1783 - The Treaty of Paris is signed by the victorious United States and the defeated Great Britain 
     
  18121812 - 1815: The War of 1812 between U.S. and Great Britain, ended in a stalemate but confirmed America's Independence 
     
  1821Mexico wins independence from Spain and claims Utah 
     
  18221822-1829 - William H Ashley exploration and the discovery of a central route to the Pacific sends trappers to northern Utah who answered an advertisement in the St. Louis Gazette and Public Advertiser in the winter of 1822: "Enterprising Young Men...to ascend the Missouri to its source, there to be employed for one, two, or three years." Amongst those to respond were Jim Beckwourth, Tom Fitzpatrick, David Jackson, Hugh Glass, Jim Bridger and Jedediah Smith 
     
  1824Jim Bridger ( Old Gabe 1804-1881) discovers the Great Salt Lake 
     
  1826Jedediah Smith (1799-1831) leads expeditions to California and Nevada 
     
  1832Antoine Robidoux ( 1794 - 1860 )builds a trading post in the Utah Basin  
     
  1841Capt. John Bartleson leads first wagon train of settlers, including Nancy Kelsey - the first white woman ever to see Utah, across Utah to California 
     
  1843John C. Fremont (1813-1890) and Kit Carson ( Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson ( 1809 - 1868) explore the Great Basin 
     
  18441844-45: Miles Goodyear (1817 - 1849) builds Fort Buenaventura 
     
  1846First party of Mormon settlers arrive in the Salt Lake Valley lead by Brigham Young (1801-1877) 
     
  1846In just over twenty years 70,000 Mormons travelled along the Mormon Pioneer Trail, across 5 states in order to escape religious persecution 
     
  1848U.S. wins Mexican War 
     
  1848Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo is signed which cedes Utah to the United States  
     
  1853The Walker War with the Ute Indians begins over slavery among the Indians  
     
  1859John Brown raided Harpers Ferry and set in motion events that led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War. 
     
  18611861 - 1865: The American Civil War. outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president and in 1861 the South Secedes. The initial Secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. 
     
  18651865-1868 Ute Black Hawk War last major Indian conflict in Utah 
     
  18651865 December 6 - The Abolishment of Slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, thus officially abolishing slavery. 
     
  1865The surrender of Robert E. Lee on April 9 1865 signalled the end of the Confederacy 
     
  1896Statehood - The Date that Utah was admitted to the Union - January 4, 1896. Constitution - Utah was the 45th State to be admitted to the Union. State Motto - " Industry " 
     
  18981898-1901 The Spanish American War. On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris the US annexes Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines.
