The Native Indians of Nebraska were the were the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, Chippewa, Delaware, Fox, Omaha, Fox, Kansas, Kiowa, Missouri, Iowa Oto, Sauk and the Pawnee tribes

  1541The Spanish explorer, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado (1510-1554) explores Kansas  
     
  1682The French explorer RenĂ©-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (1643-1687) explores the area 
     
  1724French explorer Etienne Veniard de Bourgmont (1698-1725) claims the region for France  
     
  1762France lose Kansas to Spain 
     
  17561756 - 1763: The Seven Years War (French and Indian War) due to disputes over land is won by Great Britain. France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for Cuba. 
     
  17751775 - 1783 - The American Revolution creates the United States of America. The Revolution was due to the British burden of taxes and total power to legislate any laws governing the American colonies. George Washington led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War (American War of Independence) 
     
  1776July 4, 1776 - United States Declaration of Independence  
     
  1778July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain and makes an alliance with the American revolutionary forces 
     
  1783September 3, 1783 - The Treaty of Paris is signed by the victorious United States and the defeated Great Britain 
     
  1800'sConflict erupts between settlers and Native Indians including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, Chippewa, Delaware, Fox, Omaha, Fox, Kansas, Kiowa, Missouri, Iowa, Oto, Sauk and the Pawnee tribes throughout the 1800's. The Native Indians are gradually forced to cede their lands 
     
  1800The Spanish return the land to France in 1800 by the Treaty of San Ildefonso 
     
  1803The U.S. acquires Nebraska in the Louisiana Purchase 
     
  1804Lewis and Clark reach the eastern edge of Nebraska Info - Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770- 1838) 
     
  1806Zebulon M. Pike (1779-1813), a native of New Jersey, explores Southern Nebraska  
     
  1803The Louisiana Purchase: In 1803, the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France. The U.S. Secretary of State, James Madison paid 15 million dollars for the land 
     
  18121812 - 1815 - The War of 1812 between U.S. and Great Britain, ended in a stalemate but confirmed America's Independence 
     
  1819U.S. Army establish the first military post, Fort Atkinson, in Nebraska 
     
  1820Major Stephen H. Long (1784-1864) leads the first scientific exploration to the rocky mountains 
     
  1830The Indian Removal Act allowing the U.S. government to relocate Native Americans west of the Mississippi River 
     
  1830Traders took the first wagons to the Rocky Mountains - the Oregon Trail  
     
  1848Fort Kearny is established along the Oregon Trail 
     
  1854Kansas was made a separate territory by the Kansas-Nebraska Act 
     
  1861The Pony Express starts carrying mail from Missouri to California  
     
  18611861 - 1865: The American Civil War. In 1859 John Brown raided Harpers Ferry and set in motion events that led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War. outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president and in 1861 the South Secedes. The initial Secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. 
     
  1865The surrender of Robert E. Lee on April 9 1865 signalled the end of the Confederacy 
     
  18651865 December 6 - The Abolishment of Slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, thus officially abolishing slavery 
     
  1867Statehood - The Date that Nebraska was admitted to the Union - March 1, 1867. Constitution - Nebraska was the 37th State to be admitted to the Union. State Motto - " Equality before the Law " 
     
  18981898-1901 The Spanish American War. On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris the US annexes Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines.
